The Treachery of Emojis

This is not an eggplant

🍆

The eggplant emoji may be the most infamous example of how digital culture transforms a simple icon into a signal that communicates far more than it appears to on the surface.

Emojis are not just visual elements. They’re globally recognized symbols.

And sometimes they function as a kind of coded language shaped by humor, taboo, and shared understanding.

Today, the eggplant emoji is a widely recognized phallic symbol online.

This piece echoes René Magritte’s The Treachery of Images, “This is not a pipe,” where he points out that the image is not the object itself. He also noted that it would be a lie to write, “This is a pipe.”

In this case, the treachery goes further.

The eggplant emoji no longer even points to its original object. It now carries an entirely different meaning shaped through shared use.

And still, it would be a lie to say, “This is an eggplant.”
